New Airbnb tax
As of 1 January 2025, there will be a 7.5 per cent levy for short stay holiday house accommodation bookings in Victoria. This will apply to platforms such as Airbnb and Stayz.
Who pays the levy?
If the accommodation booking is made via a booking platform, the levy needs to be paid by the booking platform.
Owners who accept short stay bookings without a booking platform need to register with the SRO to pay the levy either annually or quarterly, depending on their total booking fees.
This levy only applies to short-term accommodation which is defined as a period less than 28 days.
Exemptions
If you rent out your principal residence, you are not required to pay the levy.
More information can be found on the SRO website.
